Manning, Harold was a Newington resident for almost 60 years. He was a graduate of the Norwich Free Academy, Class of 1938, where he played football, track, and basketball. Manning, of Newington, beloved husband for 65 years of Helene (Greenman) Manning, died Thursday, October 25, 2007. Born in Norwich, son of the late Frederick and Vera H. Manning, Harold was a Newington resident for almost 60 years. He was a graduate of the Norwich Free Academy, Class of 1938, where he played football, track, and basketball. Harold was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served on an LSD (Landing Ship Dock) in the Pacific. He was a 65 year member of Local 218 and 777 and was general superintendent for the Horton Co. and the Tucker Co. before retiring in 1982. Harold became an Eagle Scout in 1934 and was a 65 year veteran of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a Scoutmaster for many years in Newington and then held many volunteer positions in Scouting, being active up to the day he died, in the Conn. Rivers Council and the Mark Twain District. He has been a member of Troop 347 Newington for over 56 years. Harold was a longtime member of the Newington Historical Society and along with his wife Helene and were members of the Newington Square Dance Club in which he served as President at one time. Harold's hobbies were fishing, gardening, and camping. He was a long time stamp collector and a member of several Philatelic Clubs. Along with his wife Helene, Harold is survived by his three children James W. Manning and his wife Marion, of Valparaiso , Indiana, Jane M. Puzine and her husband John, of Reading, MA, and Richard L. Manning and his wife Betty, of Amherst, MA; his five grandchildren Thomas Manning, of IL, David P. Manning, of NV, Cynthia Nicolaou, of MA, Peter Manning, of NH, and Timothy Manning who is in the Air Force in Germany, and three great-grandchildren Grant, Holly, and Sarah Manning. Harold's funeral service will be held Monday at 9:00 a.m. from the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, CT followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Newington. Interment will be in Center Cemetery, Newington. Relatives and friends are invited to call Sunday 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Newington Memorial .
