Graveside Services and Burial will be held at 3 P.M., Thursday, December 22, 2005, from the McCormick Cemetery, rural Ottumwa, Iowa. Harold W. Swanson was born on June 4, 1931 in Rural Ottumwa, Iowa, to Arnold J. Swanson and Gladys L. (Mullenix) Swanson. He was an Agency, Iowa High School graduate and then attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa for two years. He then received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1958 and his Masters degree in 1963. Harold was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict serving from 1952 to 1954. He married Rachel A. Christy on September 2, 1950 in Agency, Iowa. Harold had worked as a business teacher at Maquoketa Community High School from 1958 to 1974. He then became a sales representative for Readers Digest Quality School Plan from 1974 until retiring in 1997. In retirement, Harold taught night school at Clinton Community College for several years, and worked as a substitute teacher until present. Harold was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa, Masonic Helion Lodge #36 AF & AM of Maquoketa, and the Maquoketa Country Club where he had served as past president. He was a former member of the Maquoketa Optimist Club. Harold loved his family, golfing, snow skiing, water skiing, boating, camping, and biking. He also enjoyed his motorcycle and playing his organ. Harold is survived by: his wife- Rachel Christy Swanson of Maquoketa, IA; children- Nancy Swanson of Gunnedah, NSW, Australia, Becky(Mrs. Jerry) Miller of Blue Grass, IA, Sheri(Mrs. Brad) Hilligoss of Coal Valley, IL, & Doug(Sharon) Swanson of Eldridge, IA; 9 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; & 2 brothers- Charles(Dorothy) Swanson of Agency, IA, & Richard(Jo) Swanson of Allie, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, & a grandson- Tyler B. Hilligoss.
