"Leaves have their time to fall and flowers to wither at the north wind's breath; but thou hast no time at all. All the seasons are thine own, Oh Death." Harold Walsh Trues, only child of Cecil and Susie (Walsh) Truex, was born at Bristow, Iowa, August 14, 1914 and passed out of this life at Mercy hospital, Waverly, at 4:00 a.m. Sept. 12, 1930. His entire life has been spent in the Bristow community, and he was a member of the bible school of the Church of Christ and a tenth grade student in Bristow high school. Ill health first manifested itself in his case last spring, at which time he submitted to a major surgical operation at Waverly, from whish he seemed to make a normal recovery, but on August 16, he was again stricken and on August 17 he submitted to a second surgical operation at Mercy hospital, Waverly, and was able to return to his farm home on September 6. But on September 10 he suffered a severe relapse and was taken back to the hospital, where a third emergency operation was performed on September 11, as an only alternative to save his life. He passed through the ordeal, but during the early morning hours of September 12, the slender thread of life snapped, and the tired spirit departed and Harold Truex went to his eternal home. Death is sorrowful always, but when it comes to one in life's early morn, the bitter pangs sink deeper. The Death Angel called just when nature was reaching the noontime hour, filled with life and promise, but God, who moves in a mysterious way, will complete the life just begun here in the heavenly home, and the sweet memory of Harold will send us flowers as the years slip away, which will settle into a beautiful, peaceful benediction. "Sometime when all life's lessons have been learned, The things which our weak judgment here has spurned, The things 'o'er which we grieved with lashes wet, Will flash before us out of life's dark night. As stars shine most in deepest tints of blue; And we shall see how all God's plans are right, And how what seemed reproof was most true. But not today; then be content sad heart. God's plans, like lilies pure and white unfold, We must not tear the close shut leaves apart, Time will reveal the calyxes of gold. And if through patient toil we reach the goal, Where tired feet with sandals loosed may rest, When we shall clearly see and understand, I think that we shall say, 'God knows best.'" Funeral services, in charge of Mrs. A.S. Holzschuh, of Waterloo, a former pastor and close friend, assisted by Elder Beadle, Hampton, were from the home at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, where a brief prayer service was held and was continued at the Church of Christ at 2:00 o'clock. Elder Beadle offering prayer. Mrs. Holzschuh read the obituary prepared by Mrs. Waite and continued with her message of loving sympathy and hope based on her scripture reading. A quartette, W.A. Richards, H.L. Searle, Mrs. Waite and Mrs. Morford, with Mrs. Edna Needham at the piano, sang favorite hymns. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful. Harold's cousins, Glen, Carl and Charles Truex, Jimmie and Archie McNeilus and Hollis Overturf, were his casket bearers. The committal service and interment were at Oak Hill. Practically every home in this vicinity was represented at the funeral. Many came from neighboring communities, and still others from a distance until a veritable throng was assembled as an expression of sympathy and tribute of respect on this sad occasion.
