Description	:	Harold Wendell Ruth was born October 16, 1928 at the farm home of his parents, Harry and Etta (Rink) Ruth in Dawson Township, Greene County, Iowa. He attended country school until the 5th grade when his parents moved to Paton. While attending school in Paton he was involved in many activities including both instrumental and vocal music. Read More	Harold Wendell Ruth was born October 16, 1928 at the farm home of his parents, Harry and Etta (Rink) Ruth in Dawson Township, Greene County, Iowa. He attended country school until the 5th grade when his parents moved to Paton. While attending school in Paton he was involved in many activities including both instrumental and vocal music. He won several letters while participating in both baseball and basketball. He graduated in 1946. He attended Morningside College in Sioux City. The next summer he worked at the John Deere Foundry at East Moline, Illinois. In the fall of 1948 he joined the Navy and became an aerographer (weather man). When possible he also played some baseball and basketball at various stations. When the Korean War broke out in 1950, his ship, an attack transport was one of the first to carry Marines to Pusan while it was under siege. A few weeks later they were also involved in the landings at Inchon and then at Wonson. He was scheduled to be discharged in 1951, but his time was extended one year because of the war by then President Truman. On January 13, 1952 he was united in marriage to Gayleen Powell in the Lutheran Church at Gowrie. To this union he was blessed with four children: Jeff, Greg, Randy and Dawn. Harold received an honorable discharge in October, 1952 and started farming in 1953. He was baptized and confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson in 1953. He started an Allis Chalmers business in 1957 in Jefferson. In 1961, he added a Farm and City distributing franchise and also established a satellite store at Gowrie. In 1964, he sold the Allis Chalmers part of the business and moved the Farm and City down town in Jefferson. The Farm and City business was sold in 1970 and continued until about 1981. With the help of his wife Gayleen he started an antique business and also became an antique appraiser, traveling throughout Iowa and the surrounding states doing shows and also appraising. In 1984, he and Gayleen opened an antique shop in Carroll. In 1985, he joined a group of antique dealers and started the Heritage Square Antique Mall in Spirit Lake and was elected president. The mall prospered for many years. He retired in 2001 but still did appraising. At different times their collections were guns, glassware, toys and the last was one of the largest Heddon fishing tackle in Iowa. Over the years one of his loves was watching their children and grandchildren excel in volleyball, baseball, softball, football, basketball and wrestling. He enjoyed music. Since the 1930's he had enjoyed going to Spirit Lake and spending many summers fishing, boating, and singing at the cabin. Harold was preceded in death by his parents and Babe Ruth. He is survived by his wife; four children; son Jeff (Marcia) Ruth of Pine City, MN, son Greg (Maralie) Ruth of Jefferson, IA, son Randy (Cynthia) Ruth of Adair, IA, and daughter Dawn (Paul) Hill of Alta, IA; nine grandchildren: Matt (Sara) Ruth of Pine City, MN, Tyson Ruth of Jefferson, IA, Jerad (Kayla) Ruth of Iowa City, IA, Haily (Mitch) Larson of Jefferson, IA, Whitney (Brandon) Harper of Adair, IA, Quinn Ruth of Adair, IA, and Abigail, Elizabeth, and Sierra Hill of Alta, IA; and five great-grandchildren: Sofia Ruth of Pine City, MN, Hunter Ruth, Cassady Ruth, and McKenna Ruth all of Jefferson, IA, and Bianca Ruth of Brazil. Funeral Services for Harold Ruth, 84, of Paton were at 11:00 am Friday, December 7, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson. Burial will be at the Dawson Township Cemetery in Greene County at a later date. Visitation was after 1:00 pm Thursday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
