He was born July 3, 1918 in Gosper County, Nebraska to Lloyd and Susan [Carter] Haney. He attended rural school in Gosper County and completed his eighth grade education. He then joined his father on the family farm. On February 23, 1937, he married Dorothy Moncrief in Elwood, Nebraska. To this union one son, Doyle, was born. Harold and Dorothy farmed in the Elwood-Smithfield area from 1937 until May of 2003. They worked side-by-side running a successful farm and cattle operation. Harold was extremely proud of his cattle herd. Their well-manicured farmstead was the envy of all who passed by. Harold's sound judgment and decision making was an attribute that carried him through his life. He had a regular seat at the Lexington Sale Barn and enjoyed the many friends he had there. He loved visiting with the neighbors and anyone else that happened to stop by. In May 2003 Harold and Dorothy had a farm sale and retired, moving to Lincoln to be close to their son, daughter-in-law and family. They enjoyed daily walks and spent time with family and new friends in the neighborhood. Harold had open-heart surgery on December 10, 2003 and was at home recuperating when he suffered a major stoke. He spent his last six days in the hospital where he passed away peacefully with his family at his side. He was a member of the Bertrand Volunteer Fire Department and ASCS where he was also a board member for both. Survivors include his loving wife of over 65 years, Dorothy of Lincoln, Nebraska; son: Doyle and his wife Judy Haney of Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren: Ben and wife Jen Haney of Lincoln, Nebraska, Leann and husband Pat Frederick of Lincoln, Nebraska, Angie and husband Bob Bredthauer of Lincoln, Nebraska; great-grandchildren: Sarah Bredthauer, Jesse, Laney, and Jake Frederick all of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother-in-law: Norman Meyer of Kearney, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Melba Huckfeldt and her husband Marvin, and Phyllis Meyer. Funeral services were Saturday, December 27, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Elwood United Methodist Church in Elwood, Nebraska, with Reverend Bonnie Linton-Hendrick and Darrel Wissmann, PMA, officiating. Burial in the Elwood Cemetery in Elwood, Nebraska. Memorials are kindly suggested to the Nebraska Heart Association, The Nebraska Alzheimer's Association, or The Elwood United Methodist Church. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington, Nebraska was in charge of arrangements.
