He was born November 7, 1929 in the Chalmers area to William R and Martha Sophia Zarse and graduated from Chalmers High School in 1948. He was born November 7, 1929 in the Chalmers area to William R and Martha Sophia Zarse and graduated from Chalmers High School in 1948. He farmed in White County for many years before working for Purdue University's agronomy department. There he tested hybrid corn, worked with Orville Reddenbacher, and was sent to South Florida on a research project. He worked for Alcoa in Lafayette as a press operator in the tube mill, training many employees until his retirement in 1994. Harold was a gentle man. He enjoyed traveling and found many ways to help people. For example when AIDS struck in Lafayette in the 1980's, he and his wife Lucille stored and provided hospital beds to those in need. He participated in the annual AIDS walk in Indianapolis and was publicly recognized for his community service. He will be sorely missed and long remembered by his family and friends. Harold was an Army veteran having served in the Korean conflict, and was stationed in Italy. He was a devoted husband of 37 years since his marriage on May 1, 1976 to Lucille Burris Zarse at the Tippecanoe County Courthouse, she survives. Also surviving are his two children; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepchildren; and three stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by a stepson Anthony Henry in August 2013 and a stepgranddaughter Maureen Edwina Henry in 1977.
