Description	:	BIO: Harriett Ann Shaw. Wife of David S. Smith. Born 18 Jul. 1842 in Washington Co. Iowa. She joined the Six Mile Class Meeting (one of the first Methodist organizations in Mahaska County) at the age of 12 and remained a firm believer. She was married in March 1860. Children were: Michael I.; Hester C.; James E.; Rosa Belle; Noah W.. David 0.; Norman and Hosa. James had died by 1920. Born 18 Jul. 1842 in Washington Co. Iowa. She joined the Six Mile Class Meeting (one of the first Methodist organizations in Mahaska County) at the age of 12 and remained a firm believer. She was married in March 1860. Children were: Michael I.; Hester C.; James E.; Rosa Belle; Noah W.. David 0.; Norman and Hosa. James had died by 1920. There were two others but nothing is known of them (assume they died very early). Noah W. and Hosa lived much of their adult lives in South Dakota and Montana, respectively. When she died on 31 Oct. 1923 she was one of the very few remaining pioneer settlers. She had come to the prairie when just a baby and lived to see the wide, unbroken prairie transformed into fertile farms, the trails of the Indians become public highways and the log cabin replaced by the modern home. She went by wagon to Eddyville to see the first train arrive over the old Des Moines Valley Rail- road. Some time after her husband had died she left the farm and moved to Fremont. Here she allegedly had a paralytic stroke and supposedly lived in Mahaska Hospital the remainder of her life. She was buried with her husband.
