Jenkins Harriet Elivira McLaughlin, daughter of Samuel B. and Rachel McLaughlin, was born Sept. 17, 1852 in Marshall county, Ill., and died Dec. 12, 1930 at her home in Fontanelle at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 25 days. She was next to the youngest of 13 children. On Jan. 21, 1873 she was united in marriage with Robert W. Jenkins, La Prarie Center, Ill., where they lived till 1878 when they came to Iowa for 15 years. They lived in Red Oak, Villisca and Council Bluffs while Mr. Jenkins was employed as a traveling salesman for a wholesale hardware company. In 1890 they moved onto the Jenkins farm eight miles northwest of Fontanelle in Eureka township and there they made their home for 23 years. In 1913 they found it necessary to retire from the hard work of the farm life and moved to Fontanelle, which has been their home ever since for many years. Mrs. Jenkins has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church having united with that church in Villisca in 1884. When they moved to Eureka township she helped to found the old Elma chapel M.E. church then when they moved to Fontanelle she brought her membership here and has been an active and devoted member ever since. She was a member of the Rebekah lodge and Women's Relief Corps. In these societies as well as in many other activities she exerted an active influence for the betterment of the community. Her strong character built on the foundations of the faithful Christian life leaves in this world much evidence of her kindly interest in all mankind and her desire to make the world happier. She attended high school in Sparkland, Ill. She is survived by her husband and four children, Charles Jenkins and Mrs. Ed Suptkin, Valley Junction and Mrs. Chris Franks and Bert Jenkins of Fontanelle. Also there are five grandchildren and one brother, Samuel McLaughlin, Chillicothe, Ill., many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14 at 2 o'clock by the pastor, Rev. James Walls. By her own request the Twenty-third Psalm was used as the text. It was the one selected by her father for his funeral service. Interment was in the Fontanelle cemetery.
