Description	:	Hattie Barrett Speer was born in Marmaton, Kansas, the daughter of Kansas pioneers - William Barrett and Olive Barber, who went to Kansas as children with their widowed mothers (respectively) in the "free state" influx in 1859. Hattie married Robert Cargill ("RC") Speer 12 Sept 1888 in Blue Hill, Nebraska. RC ran a country store, first in Nebraska then later in Seybert, Indiana. Cecil Rae Corliss who made the best fudge in the world), Olive "Ollie" Margaret (11 Sep 1891-Feb 1976, born during a visit to Michigan, m. Willis Robert Dennis), Tennessee Marie (who went by Marie after marriage, 27 Feb 1895-16 Jun 1987, born during a visit to Hattie's uncle in Knoxville, TN, married James Clifford Ford), Ella Fern (1 Apr 1900-8 Jun 1977, also born during a visit to Michigan, m. Frederick L. Rice), Robert "Bob" (b. 21 Jan 1903, m. Erna Zimmerman), and Barrett Thomas (27 Jun 1905-8 Mar 1912, died young). For the last 30 years of her life, after the death of RC, Hattie spent part of the year in Quincy, MI with daughter Ella Rice and part of the year in Franklin, PA with daughter Marie Ford. She crocheted beautiful blankets and hooked stunning rugs, which she hung on the front lawn in Quincy and sold to folks on the main Detroit-to-Chicago road on which they lived. She became nearly deaf and used an old-fashioned metal horn to hear folks, but remained full of humor and liveliness right up to her death at 94.
