In 1888, "Hattie," age 20, married George Armstrong, about age 30, in Albion, Noble County, Indiana. According to their marriage record, George's residence at the time was Ava, Jackson County, in southern Illinois. The circumstances of their meeting and courtship are unknown. Albion, Indiana is 400 miles northeast of Ava, Illinois. In the next six years, Hattie bore three children, two sons and a daughter. George's occupation is not known. After the last child, Roy, was conceived in March 1894, no further record of any kind has been found for George Armstrong. Within a few years, it's likely that George died. His burial location in unknown. In the summer of 1899, Hattie Armstrong, 31, remarried to Thomas DeVault, a 42-year-old widower with at least two children. Thomas and Hattie would have no children of their own The 1900 U.S. Census, taken in June, finds the DeVault family in Syracuse, Kosciusko County, Indiana. Thomas owned a restaurant. His step-children Ruth and Roy are shown but not older brother Ray. Thomas' 14-year-old son, Harry, is also listed. By 1910, Thomas became a livestock buyer and the family lived in Sparta Township of Noble County. Step-son Roy Armstrong, age 15, is the only child at home. In 1920, Thomas is shown as a farmer, still in Sparta Township. Harriet's uncle, John Dull, is a neighbor. In the 1920s, after twenty plus years of marriage, Hattie and Thomas divorced. He stayed alone on the Sparta Township farm and died in 1937. His burial location is unknown. By 1930, Hattie moved into the Frank Hayden home in Mishawaka with her son, Roy Armstrong, daughter-in-law Lela Hayden and five grandchildren. For some years, Hattie worked as servant in a private home. Hattie lived in that Mishawaka home until her death in 1949 at age 81.
