She received her education in the local schools and was a 1944 graduate of the former St. Paul's High School, Worthington. On April 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Ambrose "Sam" Knepper at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington; he preceded her in death on May 5, 1997. A true lady of many talents, Harriet shared her gifts with friends and family alike, ensuring that each new grandchild was received into the family with one of her special baby afghans and sent off to college with the warmth of a Grandma quilt. In her spare time, Harriet enjoyed her gardens and spending time with friends over a game of cards, at the bowling lanes or on a golf course. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Our Blessed Mother Court 1926, the Cascade American Legion Auxiliary and St. Matthias Parish, Cascade. She served many years as a volunteer at Aquin Elementary School and at Shady Rest Care Center. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara (Tim) Smith, and two sons, Steve (Dianne) Knepper and Larry (Joyce) Knepper, all of Cascade; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Knepper, of Dubuque; 14 grandchildren, Shelley, Ben, James, Jill, Stacy, Jeff, Jenny, Allison, Kristi, Trisha, Jake and Kelsey Knepper and Courtney and Josh Smith; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rachel Kelchen, of Dyersville, and Grace (Marvin) Heinrichs, of Coggan; a brother, William (Mag) Schockemoehl, of Worthington; five sisters-in-law, Florence Schockemoehl, of Cascade, Josephine Neville, of Anamosa, Monica Oyen, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Marion Kearney, of Dubuque, and Odelia Doden, of Monticello; and five brothers-in-law, Joe Comer, of Dyersville, Stanley Holub, of Coggan, Frances Knepper, of Cascade, Cyril Knepper, of Marion, and Norbert Knepper, of Hiawatha. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Pamela Knepper, in 1971; a son, Joseph Knepper, in 2000; four sisters, Laura Schockemoehl, Marion Radloff, LaVerne Holub and Stella Comer; and a brother, Harry Schockemoehl. A Harriet L. Knepper Memorial Fund has been established.
