Description	:	The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Leader, Harriet was born in Pennsylvania. She married George Jones sometime before the birth of their son, Louie Jones, in 1884. George was a native of Wales and the family lived in Mahaska County, Iowa. [Note: A man named George Jones, who was born in Wales, lived in Lucas County, Iowa in 1880. He was a miner, and the census taker noted that he was in ill health when the census was recorded that year. She married George Jones sometime before the birth of their son, Louie Jones, in 1884. George was a native of Wales and the family lived in Mahaska County, Iowa. [Note: A man named George Jones, who was born in Wales, lived in Lucas County, Iowa in 1880. He was a miner, and the census taker noted that he was in ill health when the census was recorded that year. This may or may not have been the man who married Harriet Leader.] Harriet's husband, George, died in 1888 at the age of 37. Tragically, Harriet gave birth to their son 4 months after her husband's death. Harriet married a barber named Carl C. Yates around 1894. They were the parents of at least 1 child. Carl was incarcerated in Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa on 11 Nov 1897. They divorced before the turn of the century. At that time, Harriet worked as a housekeeper in Oskaloosa, Iowa. On the 1900 census, Harriet reported that she was the mother of 8 children, although only 3 were still living. Her surviving children, Louie and Oscar Jones from her first marriage and Roy Yates from her second marriage, lived with her in Oskaloosa. Carl Yates was released from prison on 10 Jan 1901. On 15 Mar 1901, Harriet remarried Carl. They lived in Oskaloosa with her 2 surviving sons from her first marriage, and Harriet and Carl's son, Roy. Like Carl, Roy worked as a barber. Louie married his first wife in 1909 and moved to Omaha, Nebraska. He worked as a night agent and became a career railroad man. Oscar married for the first time in 1910 and spent his career working as a waiter. Harriet died in 1916 at the age of 65 years, 1 month and 2 days. She was buried next to her first husband, George Jones. She was survived by her husband, Carl Yates; and 3 sons, Louie Jones, Oscar Jones and Roy Yates. By 1920, Harriet's son, Roy, moved to Boone County, Iowa where he continued working as a barber. Harriet's husband, Carl, passed away in 1921 and was buried next to her. They share a headstone. Children: 3 sons, 5 unknown infants. Mother of: Louis L. "Louie" Jones Oscar Jones Roy Jefferson Yates ---------- Please note: Some records have Harriet's maiden name recorded as Leater or Leacher. However, the vast majority of records associated with her and her sons have it spelled Leader.
