Genealogist Arthur Horton Locke states Harriet was born in 1833 and died in 1866 on page 171 of his book, "A history and genealogy of Captain John Locke (1627-1696) of Portsmouth and Rye, N. H., and his descendants." Her headstone indicates her age was 33 when she died, which is a reasonable confirmation that 1866 is the year she died. Genealogist Arthur Horton Locke states Harriet was born in 1833 and died in 1866 on page 171 of his book, "A history and genealogy of Captain John Locke (1627-1696) of Portsmouth and Rye, N. H., and his descendants." Her headstone indicates her age was 33 when she died, which is a reasonable confirmation that 1866 is the year she died. We are then left with the possibility that Arthur Horton Locke was wrong about the year she was born AND the year she died, or that the year of her death (1886) chiseled into her headstone was in error (also erroneously indicating her birth year as 1853), which also would not correlate with her age listed as 31 in the 1865 Rhode Island Census. Both a copy of Locke's genealogy book page 171 and the 1865 Rhode Island have been added to her findagrave Memorial photos to aid in the explanation. Feel free to remove these at any time. Of course, Headstones are usually taken as the final authority. However, in this case, the genealogist's dates seem to make more sense.
