Description	:	Our beautiful mother, Harriet P. Thurston-Balluff, passed into her final sleep on September 10, 2015 at Shattuck Manor Assisted Living in Saginaw, MI. She was born at home on June 7, 1923 to Clara (McKimmey) and Lawrence Hughes of Beaverton, Mi. Harriet attended a one-room school for several years, then transferred to Beaverton High School where she graduated at the age of 16. Harriet also attended Business College in Ypsilanti MI. Thurston-Balluff, passed into her final sleep on September 10, 2015 at Shattuck Manor Assisted Living in Saginaw, MI. She was born at home on June 7, 1923 to Clara (McKimmey) and Lawrence Hughes of Beaverton, Mi. Harriet attended a one-room school for several years, then transferred to Beaverton High School where she graduated at the age of 16. Harriet also attended Business College in Ypsilanti MI. Harriet loved dancing and was able to enjoy doing so well into her late 80s. She enjoyed traveling and saw most of the U.S. while visiting her children and many friends throughout the country. Harriet's warm heart and giving spirit drew her to help others while volunteering at Shelter House for women, the Red Cross Blood Bank and any other volunteer assignments she could find. A proud accomplishment for her was gaining her real estate license and meeting new friends selling homes. She was a long time member of the American Legion in Midland and proudly served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary in 2002. Harriet was very active until shortly before her death and was rarely found idly sitting. Harriet is survived by three brothers, Jerry Hughes, Maynard (Alice) Hughes and Jim (Margaret) Hughes, and sister-in-law Jean Hughes. She is survived by her children Connie (Richard) Brabaw, Sherry Gonzales, Kathy Hansen, Kim Thurston and Curtiss (Roslyn) Thurston. She was very fortunate to be able to share her love with surviving step-children Jim, Barbara Kay , Mary Kay (Sam ), Audrey, Dave (Charlotte), Bruce, Lorie (Adam), Cecilia (Mike), Emily (John) and Amy (Jason), and their children. Harriet is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Travis, Kipp, Torrie, Kammi, Emily, Caden, Zachariah and Shawn (and long-time caregiver); nine great-grandchildren, Mickey, Jasmine, Michael, Matthew, Michaela, McKenzie, Jacob, Autumn, Oliver; and three great-great grandchildren, Carter, Lane, and Benny, step-daughters-in-law Barbara Ann and Barbara Lou as well as many nieces and nephews who were very special to her. She was preceded in death by husband Leon Thurston (1991), husband Gustave Balluff (2013), brothers Bob, Pete, Jack and Larry, sisters-in-law Etta Jean, Lorraine, Joyce, Deanie and Lillian, son-in-law Jesse, step-sons Ron and Doug, daughter-in-law Sachiyo, grandsons Brad, Troy and granddaughter Tammy. We would like to extend a special thank you to Wellspring Lutheran Hospice and Shattuck Manor Assisted Living for the wonderful and special care they took of our mother. She was loved by everyone she met and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Viewing, visitation and Eulogy, given by great-nephew, Gary Lee Dunham, will be at The Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 Wheeler Rd, Midland MI from 3p-7p on Sunday, September 13th, and visitation at noon before funeral service on September 14th at 1:00pm given by Rev. Mike T. Sawicki of Aldersgate Methodist church in Midland, Mi.
