Harriett Eleanor Hanson was born on 2 September 1869 in Wisconsin, to Nelson Hanson (1836-1924) Sweden and Ada Jane Moody (1840-1925) Pennsylvania. Harriett Eleanor Hanson was born on 2 September 1869 in Wisconsin, to Nelson Hanson (1836-1924) Sweden and Ada Jane Moody (1840-1925) Pennsylvania. She had 7 siblings: Benjamin Hanson (1865-1891) Bertha Hanson (1867-1948) Joseph Miles Hanson (1868-1921) Jesse Spaulding Hanson (1871-1921) Irene Hanson (1874-1894) Perry Oliver Hanson (1875-1967) Ira Bray Hanson (1879-1880) The family moved to Clear Lake, Iowa in 1880 coming from Darlington, Wisconsin because her father, Nelson had malaria and they left because of his health. Her brother Perry Oliver wrote..." The seven of us grew up on the shores of Clear Lake, in a beautiful situation." Nelson and Ada Jane both believed in and stressed an education. When Nelson first came to America, he enrolled in Beloit College, in Wisconsin and Ada Jane had been educated as a teacher in Pennsylvania. They believed in community involvement and church service. Harriett and her sister Bertha graduated from the University of Minnesota. They also helped put their brother, Perry Oliver through school at the same University. Harriett became a social worker in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. She never married. Upon the death of her brother Jesse in 1921 and his wife Zeta in 1926, she adopted their 3 minor children, Muriel, Marjorie, and Roger Jesse. She raised them in Pittsburgh and educated them. All of them graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, and went on to be active in their respective communities. All doing work in some form or another in the "family" business of service. She lectured regularly on the value and necessity of Charitable works. After raising her nieces and nephew, she relocated to St. Paul Minnesota, to join her parents and help them with their new business adventure, the "St. Paul Commons" After many years, when her parents went back to Clear Lake, she returned to Pittsburgh. Harriett spent her life dedicated in the service of those who were less fortunate. A common theme for this incredible family. Harriett died on 5 October 1939 in Pittsburgh of Chronic Myocarditis. Her daughter Muriel signed for her to be sent to her final resting place, with her family, in Clear Lake.
