Frank and Iona were engaged in farming in Yuma County. Harris attended Buffalo Grass Grade School, often riding his pony to school. He boarded with various families in Holyoke while attending high school and working at a butcher shop. He graduated from Holyoke High School in 1951. On March 8, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Sharron Scott. They made their home in Yuma County, moving to Holyoke in 1965. To their union, two children were born: son Rick and daughter Debbie. During the early years of their marriage, Harris was involved in the building of Haxtun and Paoli elevators. Many of his winters were spent working for Dale O’Neal Construction. He also custom picked corn for several years before and while acquiring his own land. Farming was Harris’s livelihood and passion, and one from which he never retired. He began his own farming operation in 1956 and grew corn, wheat and milo for many years. Harris began growing irrigated corn in 1969 and continued until 2005 while also raising dryland wheat. He often commented during the irrigation years that his favorite thing to do on his birthday was “pick corn.” He continued to grow dryland wheat until his death. He also sold Garst seed corn for many years, which involved planting test plots of numerous varieties. He won many awards for high corn yields throughout those years. He served a term on the Holyoke telephone board and was a lifelong member of the Wray Elks. Harris loved motorcycles and got his first Harley Davidson when he was 14 years old. For years it was a source of great enjoyment, going on mountain gypsy tours with Sharron, his sister Vivian and her husband Milt. He bought a new Harley in 1976, which he prized almost as much as his first grandson, born the same year. Also in 1976, Harris and Sharron moved into their newly constructed home in Holyoke, on which he and Leonard Warren did many of the finishing touches. Over the years, Harris and Sharron took many trips with Garst Seed to places throughout the U.S., but what they most enjoyed were their own personal trips to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park to see the wildlife and aspens. For many years, they celebrated Thanksgiving weekend there with family. Harris also enjoyed their trips to Deadwood, S.D., and Black Hawk, just for fun. Harris genuinely loved his four grandchildren, Justin, Sean, Brittany and Matthew, and never missed an opportunity to take them riding on four-wheelers, motorcycles, tractors and combines when they were little. They each have many special memories of time spent with their grandpa. He will be greatly missed by his entire family and the many friends who admired him deeply for his honesty, integrity and deep convictions. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Vivian; infant baby brother, Samuel; brothers-in-law, Dale Ozman, Blaine Scott and Herb Fisbeck; and sisters-in-law, Carol Brockish and Carmen Alley. Harris is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sharron; son, Rick and Jennie Lett of Yuma County; daughter, Debbie and John Misegadis of Centennial; grandchildren, Justin and Beth Lett of Parker, Sean Lett of Aurora, and Brittany Misegadis and Matthew Misegadis of Centennial; great-grandchildren, Madison and Emily Lett of Parker and Alexis Lett of Aurora; sisters, Lola Ozman of Denver and Janette and husband Darwin Benedict of Yuma; brother-in-law, Milt Hamann of Longmont; brother-in-law, Robert Brockish of Lafayette; sister-in-law, Dorothy Scott of Holyoke; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Harris’s funeral was held May 5 at the United Methodist Church in Holyoke, with graveside service and final resting place at Holyoke Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Geriatric Behavioral Unit of Colorado Plains Medical Center. Gerk Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
