Read More	Columbia City Post, Whitley County, Indiana Friday, January 19, 1934 James Harrison Messner, 70, died at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Linvill Memorial hospital here, having been a patient at the institution since last Friday. Death was caused by cancer of the stomach. He had not complained of feeling unwell, however, until the first of the year. Mr. Messner was well known in and around Columbia City, having been a resident of Whitley county for 34 years. He was born in Summit county, Ohio, on October 15, 1863, to William and Mary Getz Messner. He resided in and near Akron, O., until he reached the age of 21. In 1885 he came to Indiana to make his home. On November 27, 1885, he was united in marriage to Clara Ellen Kimmel, daughter of Manias and Christina Kimmel of Noble county. Mr. and Mrs. Messner continued to reside in Noble county until 1896 when they moved to Whitley county. The family has since resided in this county. Surviving are three children, Raymond Messner of Union township, Charles Messner of Buffalo, N.Y., and Mrs. Lulu Plummer of Richland township. A son died in infancy. Mrs. Messner died in 1918 and the decedent later was married to Mrs. Jennie V. Sherwood, who passed away in 1933. In addition to the three children there survive two brothers, David and Andrew Messner of Akron, O., a sister, Mrs. Priscilla Watters of Kenmore, O.; six grandchildren, Phyllis and Jean Plummer, Janice, Katherine, DeLoris and Charles Messner. A brother, George Messner, of Wadsworth, O., died last December 31 and it was while Mr. Messner was attending his brother's funeral that he became ill. He had been in fairly good health until his Ohio visit. The ailment which caused his death developed rapidly since the first of the year and despite medical aid, caused his death yesterday afternoon. He was a member of the Baptist church. Mr. Messner was active in community projects and took a prominent part in fraternal and social work. He possessed a legion of friends and acquaintances to whom he was devoted. His death, following such a brief illness, is deeply regretted by the entire community. His body has been taken to the Smith Funeral Home where friends will be received by the family from Friday evening until the hour of the funeral. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. R. C. Plank of the Methodist church at the funeral home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Interment will be made in South Park cemetery.
