Mr. and Mrs. Backus has the sincere sympathy of the community in their trouble and we hope that the one chance will be in the boy's favor. He is a bright boy and quite a mechanical genius. His sickness was caused by being struck on the head by some tackle at the slaughter house about a month ago, the wound had entirely healed and it was not thought he would suffer any serious consequences. His sufferings are terrible to behold. Pierce County Call; Pierce, Nebraska Friday, 13 December 1889 Died Backus Harry—On Thursday, at 9:30 a.m. of lack jaw, aged 9 years and five months Harry was hurt about the head about six weeks ago, the bruise healed up and the matter almost forgotten, when he was taken with lock jaw. The attending physician did all that medical skill could do for him, but it was useless. He suffered excruciating agony from the time he was taken sick, which he bore with heroism. Sunday Dr. Bear came up to examine the patient, and said that everything was being tried that could give him any relief, but he did not think his chances for recovery were good. Since Sunday powerful medicine has been used to control the spasms and were in a measure successful. One of those curious coincidences occurred before he was taken sick and while in parent good health, that appears unexplainable, let those explain who can. He parents spoke in his presence, about what they should get him for Christmas, when he repeatedly told them not to buy anything for him, that we would be dead before Christmas. The funeral services will take place at the Methodist church afternoon. The Call extends to the stricken parents the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in this their great bereavement.
