The United States entered World War I in 1917, and on September 17, 1918, this tall young farmhand, with grey eyes and brown hair, walked into the draft registration office. He told the clerk he was working for George Schmidt, and his nearest relative was Matilda Caroline Schmidt. On August 22, 1928 he married Ella Walkenhorst. In 1930, he and Ella were farming in Washington County, Nebraska. He told the census taker that he was not a veteran. From at least 1935 to 1940, Henry and Ella were living in the same house. He was farming, and they had been blessed with a daughter, June. The 1940 Census lists the highest level of formal education. In that Census, Harry C., 40, head, farmer, 8th grade, b. SCHMIDT IS DEATH VICTIM ARLINGTON - Harry C. Schmidt, aged 44, a prominent farmer of the Arlington vicinity, passed away early Tuesday morning, August 15th, at the Dodge County Hospital where he had been taken on Sunday. Mr. Schmidt had not been feeling well for the past six weeks, but had not been regarded as being seriously ill until a few days ago. A son of Mr. and Mrs. George Schmidt (the latter now deceased), he was born here on February 14, 1900, and resided here his entire life, where he held the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He was married to Ella Walkenhorst on August 22, 1928, and to this union was born one daughter, June, who with his widow, survives him. Also surviving are his father, George Schmidt; one brother, Leo F. Schmidt; and one sister, Mrs. Emil Just, all of this place. Funeral arrangements are in charge of Wm.
