The Martelle Lodge of the Knight of Pythias conducted a service at 7:30 p.m. August 14. Harry Nost was born July 31, 1911, near Mechanicsville, the son of John and Cora Wentzel Nost. He received his early education in the rural schools near his home. He graduated from the Mechanicsville High School in 1932. After his education he worked in the Mechanicsville area, where he also played semi-pro baseball. Harry Nost and Gertrude Gerdes were married September 7, 1940, at St. Paul Lutheran Church Anamosa. The couple made their home in Mechanicsville for a brief time before moving to Cedar Rapids, where Harry worked at La Plant Choate. They later farmed in the Martelle area and moved to Martelle when Harry went to work for Walnut Grove Feed. In 1963, Harry was employed by Gross Press, Cedar Rapids, where he worked until he retired in December 1976. After his retirement, the couple wintered in Zapata, Texas, and spent the summer months in Martelle. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was a 25 year member of the Knights of Pythias, Martelle Lodge. he also served on the City Council of Martelle. Surviving are his wife, Gertrude; three daughters, Mrs. Douglas (Virginia) Peet, Manassas, Virginia; Mrs. Lyle (Marilyn) Dunkel, Martelle, and Mrs. Ronald (Jan) Delaney, Cedar Rapids; and nine grandchildren.
