Elkin, Former Merchant, Dies on Thursday Funeral services for Harry Edwin Elkin, 64, of Spirit Lake, were held Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake with the Rev. Wayne Carlson officiating. Full military rites were observed at graveside at the Lakeview Cemetery by the American Legion and the VFW. Harpole-Tenold Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Bearers for the service were Bruce Johnson, Dale Garnjobst, Joe Gamble, Virgil Ludwig, Dick Christopher, and Arlo Fox. Eldon Ferguson was soloist and Mrs. Blaine Holen was organist. Mr. Elkin was born in Lily, Ill., on June 4, 1908, the son of Lloyd and Della Hasty Elkin. When he was a boy, the family moved to Estherville, and in 1937 he moved to Spirit Lake. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1946. He owned and operated Elkin Motor Service until 1964 when he went to work for the Harpole Funeral Home. In 1968, he began work as a custodian at the Spirit Lake Post Office. He died Thursday at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Elkin was a member of the United Methodist Church, Spirit Lake Kiwanis Club, and the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Hazel; a daughter, Wanda Lou Rundell of New Brighton, Minn.; a son, Dr. Edward R. Elkin of Cascade; four grandchildren; two sisters, Emily Roetman of Lake Park, and Elva Opelt of Des Moines; and two brothers, Roland of Odebolt, and Howard of Spencer.
