Blizzard, 65, former police chief in Ottumwa, died at 10:40 a.m. today at his home, 501 Queen Ann avenue, following a lengthy illness. He was born August 29, 1892, at Agency, the son of James and Nancy Josephine Henderson Blizzard. He had been a resident of Ottumwa most of his life. A veteran of World war I, he served with Co. G, 168th infantry, 42nd Rainbow division overseas. He participated in several major campaigns, and was awarded the Silver Star medal. He enlisted in the army June 24, 1916, in Ottumwa, and was discharged at Camp Dodge March 5, 1919. Mr. Blizzard served as police chief here from 1919 to 1923. Later he was with the federal government, in the narcotics division. He was a member of O.B. Nelson post, No. 3, American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, No. 114, and the Rainbow veterans. His marriage to Maybelle Manro took place December 8, 1920, in Ottumwa. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Everett F. Blizzard, Redding Calif., and two grandchildren, Debra Ann and Wayne Everett Blizzard, both of Redding. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons in infancy, two sisters and a brother. The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel awaiting completion of arrangements. “Blizzard Services,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” December 5, 1957: Funeral services for Harry E. Blizzard, 65, former Ottumwa police chief, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Johnson funeral chapel with the Rev. William Scott, pastor of the Finley Avenue Baptist church, in charge. He died at his home at 501 Queen Ann avenue Wednesday morning. Burial will be at Shaul cemetery , where military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson post of American Legion. Pallbearers will be Donald Cox, George Bissell, Wendall Graham, Frank Cockerill, Fred Schmitz and James Burns.
