Description	:	Harry Hanssen was born on January 6, 1916 on a farm southeast of Emery, SD to Tom and Martha (Tammen) Hanssen. He grew up on family farms near Emery and graduated from the 8th grade from a rural school in the Emery area. He helped his father with farming and often did chores for farmers who went on vacations. Read More	Harry Hanssen was born on January 6, 1916 on a farm southeast of Emery, SD to Tom and Martha (Tammen) Hanssen. He grew up on family farms near Emery and graduated from the 8th grade from a rural school in the Emery area. He helped his father with farming and often did chores for farmers who went on vacations. He enjoyed working with machinery and animals. He also went to North Dakota during threshing seasons and to Minnesota to pick corn by hand. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. In October 1942 he was drafted into the US Army and served 3 ½ years as a mechanic in the 694th Quartermaster Truck Co and attained the rank of Corporal. On July 9, 1946 he married Ruth Tschetter at the bride's family farm home near Bridgewater by Reverend Arthur Itterman. They have lived all their married life in the Emery area. Harry farmed from 1951 to 1962 north of Emery. In December of 1962 they moved to Emery when Harry became a self-employed farm to market trucker for 22 years. He retired in September 1984 and kept up his interest in motors, lawn mowers, bicycles and yard work. Harry was a member of the Emery Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ruth of 62 years; their three children: Brenda Gulbranson and her husband, Russell of Sioux Falls, SD, Darwin Hanssen and his wife, Joy of Bellevue, NE and Cindy Speck of Greeley, CO; eight grandchildren: Chad (Amy) Gulbranson, Lonnie (Angi) Heibult and Andy (Alison) Pulford all of Sioux Falls, SD, Scott (Heather) Hanssen, Brent (Kim) Hanssen and Mike Hanssen all of Bellevue, NE, Kelsey Speck and Paul Speck of Greeley, CO; four great-grandsons: Talon Hanssen, Dylan Gulbranson, Austin Heibult, Trent Hanssen and a step-great-grandson, Ty Smith, four great-granddaughters: Katy Gulbranson, Avery Heibult and Grace Pulford of Sioux Falls, SD and Lana Hanssen of Bellevue, NE. Harry will be greatly missed by his family and friends especially his sense of humor and his love of ice cream. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Evelyn Jelden and Helen Wilson; and two brothers: Leo Hanssen and Johnny Hanssen.
