Geneva, Feb. 20. – Working a few minutes over time to accommodate a friend cost Harry Chapin his life Tuesday morning, and his bruised and battered body was carried 40 miles on the pilot of the Lake Shore engine. Chapin had charge of the Lakeshore gates at the North Broadway Crossing nights, and should have gone off duty at 6 o'clock in the morning. About 5: 15 M. S. Rose, day towerman, paid Chapin a visit and asked him to work a couple of hours later in order that Rose might do some work at home. Chapin readily consented, and it was less than an hour later when he met his death. Chapin had evidently left his tower for the purpose of removing the signal lights from the crossing gates. A slow freight was going west on the third track, and securing the lights Chapin jumped across the head of the freight and directly in the path of the first section of No. 19, one of the fastest trains on the road. The engine plucked him up, the body becoming wedged in the pilot, and the train crew did not know that an accident had occurred until they stopped at Collinwood to change engines. Messages were immediately sent along the line and an investigation showed that Chapin was missing. A glove, a cap and the broken lantern were the only signs of the accident at the crossing, and a broken rule and a pocketknife were picked up nearby. Harry Chapin was about 35 years of age and had been an employee for the company for several years. He leaves a wife and three small children who now reside in Jefferson. Chapin had been boarding himself at the Crandall residence on Burrows Street since he came to town. Lakeshore officials notified the wife of the accident as soon as the identity of the victim was discovered and at her request the body will be shipped to Jefferson for burial.
