On March 5, 2006, Harry Jay Berg, a lifelong Meagher County resident, left this world from his home in White Sulphur Springs. Harry was born Aug. 18, 1923, in Martinsdale, to Helmar J. and Josephine Haugan Berg. Harry is survived by his wife, Beth Ilene Johnson Berg. Beth and Harry were married in June 1953. Also surviving are his children, Jo Berg and husband Mark Smith of Helena; Jay and wife Judy of White Sulphur Springs; Larry and wife Carol of White Sulphur Springs; Pattie Berg of Belgrade; and Jack Berg, also of White Sulphur Springs. His six grandchildren also survive him: Kalene Pool of Missoula; Eric Berg, a student at MSU in Bozeman; Anna, Josie and Alissa Berg; and Jacob Berg, all of White Sulphur Springs. His sister, Jean B. Ellison of White Sulphur Springs, also survives, along with sister-in-law Donna Hanna, and Eugene "Freckles" Richards of East Helena; and brother-in-law Rick Johnson and wife Marie, of Lost Creek, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other members of his large extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helmar and Josie Berg; his in-laws, L. O. (Jack) and Winnie Johnson; his sister, Dorothy, and her husband, Bill Fallis; and his foster aunt, Lillian ‘Kypp' Roe Richardson. Harry spent his youth in Martinsdale and White Sulphur Springs. He graduated with honors from high school in White Sulphur Springs in 1941. In high school, he participated in football, basketball and band. In 1941 and 1942, Harry attended Washington State College in Pullman, after which he returned to White Sulphur Springs and worked for the Berg Garage. He was drafted into the Army in 1944. Dad proudly served as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Philippines, where he was when General MacArthur returned. After honorable discharge as a 1st Sergeant from the Army in March 1946, he returned to his beloved Meagher County, where he joined his father in the family business, Berg Garage. The Berg Garage remains in business, operated by sons Jay and Jack. General Motors Corporation honored Harry for serving 50 years as a Chevrolet Dealer in 2001. The dealership is the oldest Chevy franchise in continuous operation west of the Mississippi, an accomplishment of which Harry was quite proud. Although Harry officially retired in his 70s, he continued to work nearly every day at the garage, answering phones, opening mail, and making sure all was in order at the business. His greatest pride was his family. He taught his children to appreciate music, as well as the beauty of Montana, with its wildlife, open beauty and recreational opportunities. He loved riding his 4-wheeler and spending time at his beloved 16-Mile cabin. He enjoyed attending musical and theater performances of his children and grandchildren. Even though in failing health for the past year, his spirit remained strong, and he delighted in the visits of children, grandchildren, family and friends. Harry was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, and was instrumental in building and developing the American Lutheran Church in White Sulphur Springs. He was a 50-year member of the Rotary Club and a 60-year member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Montana and National Auto Dealers Associations. He and Beth enjoyed traveling in their later years, most often with his cousin and best friend Jim and wife Ruth Berg of Lennep, although he was always glad to return home to White Sulphur Springs. Services will be on Friday, March 10, at 2 p.m., at American Lutheran Church in White Sulphur Springs, followed by military graveside services at Mayn Cemetery. Harry requested that any memorials be made to the American Lutheran Church or the Mountainview Medical Center Building Fund, both of White Sulphur Springs. Twichel Funeral Home assisted the family with the services.
