Harry Kirk Bunney was born Aug. 2, 1895 at Lincoln Center, Kansas, the son of George and Laura Bunney. As a child he lived in a sod house on a homestead in Dewey county, Okla. Their transportation was by covered wagon. At the age of 8 he went by train to Beloit, Kans., where the family lived until he was about age 11, then he made his second trip by covered wagon to Ponca City, Okla. He loved the game of baseball and was a second baseman on the school team. He worked on headers in Oklahoma, Kansas, South Dakota and in the St. Joseph (MO) area. He worked for George Sly at Rock Port and in Skidmore (MO) for George McDaniel, where he met his wife. He enlisted in the Army in January, 1918, and served in World War I for 17 months. He returned home in May 1919. His service medals included gold chevron, bronze medallion and ribbon with three bronze starts for S. Mihiel; Meuse Argonne, defensive sector and was a Private First Class. On December 23, 1920, he married Ruby Wright of Skidmore and they became parents of three children, Wendell W., Helen and Phyllis. They made their home in the Skidmore community before moving to a farm near Fairfax in 1934. They moved to town in January, 1975, where they made their home. Harry was taken to the Bethesda Care Center several years ago. Mr. Bunney was a member of the United Methodist Church, the John Richards Post of the American Legion in Fairfax and the Kiwanis Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and son, Wendell. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Bunney of the home; two daughters, Helen Miles and Phyllis Hawkins, both of Fairfax; one brother, Dan Bunney, Williams, Ariz.; one sister, Pearl Berry, Redding, Calif.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, , Jan. 29 at the United Methodist Church in Fairfax, with burial in Burr Oak Cemetery, Skidmore, MO. The body is at the Schooler funeral home, Fairfax."
