Born 3 February 1919 in Piedmont, he was the son of the late Harry and Myrtle (Metz) Harshbarger. He was also preceded in death by his wife Catherine L. (Davisson) Harshbarger, who died in 1989. ‘Bootsie,' a lifelong resident of Piedmont, was a devoted and wonderful father and grandfather. He was a decorated Army Veteran of World War II. He recently received the Jubilee of Liberty Medal from the government of France for his valor and bravery in Normandy. Mr. Harshbarger's interest centered around his family. He was previously an avid hunter and fisherman. In recent years his interest turned to bowling, which he and his son did frequently together. He was quite a sports fan and rarely missed a Keyser High School football or basketball game. He also never missed his grandson's little league games or his granddaughter's swim meets. He enjoyed flying to visit three older grandchildren in Seattle and Florida. He was retired from Westvaco Corporation with 44 years of service. He was a member of Kelly-Mansfield Post 52. American Legion. Surviving are two daughters, Becky Shook and husband Bob, Keyser; Carolyn Jett and husband Bob of Valrico, Florida; two sons, Rick Harshbarger and wife Christa of Keyser, and John Harshbarger who resided with him. His adoring grandchildren, Dr. Stacey Shook of Seattle, Washington; Jenifer Jack and husband John, Tampa, Florida, and Candice and Brett Harshbarger of Keyser. The family received friends at Boal Funeral Home, Westerport last night from 7 to 9 and again today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Elizabeth Allen Villinger officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter Cemetery, Westernport, Md., where full military honors will be accorded at graveside."
