Oakland Tribune (Oakland, California) December 8, 1939 (Friday) "Harry Drury, Member of Pioneer California Family, Passes Away Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Harry Lloyd Drury, 57, of Walnut Creek, formerly of Oakland, industrial chemist and member of a pioneer family, who died yesterday at a Berkeley hospital following a brief illness. Drury was born in Iowa Hill, Placer County, the son of pioneer parents, and spent his youth in Newcastle. Later he attended school in San Francisco and Boone's Academy in Berkeley, graduating from the University of California in the class of 1906. INDUSTRIAL CHEMIST He was for many years an industrial chemist with sugar firms, later with the Standard Oil Company, and until the time of his death was with the Zellerbach Paper Company, San Francisco. He lived for many years in Oakland where he was a founder and president of the first Dads Club in this city and a member and past president of the Santa Fe Improvement Club. After moving to "Casa Christina," his home in Walnut Creek, he became active in Alamo Lodge of the Masons and in the Mt. Diablo Garden Club. He was also a noted dog fancier and maintained a large kennel of show dogs. Drury was for some time vestryman of Trinity Episcopal Church in Oakland. He was active in the Boy Scout movement and was deputy counselor of Troop 13 and deputy commissioner of the Oakland Boy Scout Council. He also was president of the Northern California Fox Terrior Club. MEMBERS OF FAMILY His home in Walnut Creek was the gathering place each year of many California pioneers. Mrs. Drury, the former Bessie Hargrave, was also of pioneer stock. Her mother, Mrs. Frederick Hargrave, was reputed to be the first American child born in Oakland. Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Kendric R. French of Oakland, and Mrs. Robert Bradbury of Portland; twin grandchildren, Julia and Janet French; a brother, Fred Drury of Oakland, and two sisters, Miss Louise Drury of Oakland, and Miss Eliza Drury of San Francisco. The Rev. J. Henry Thomas, pastor of St. Clement's Episcopal Church, Berkeley, will officiate at funeral services at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue. Cremation will be at the California Crematorium." END AND "DEATHS. DRURY - In Berkeley, December 7, 1939, Harry Lloyd, devoted husband of Bessie Hargrave Drury; loving father of Elizabeth French and Dorothy Bradbury; brother of Fred W., Louise and Eliza Drury. A native of Iowa Hill, Calif., aged 57 years, 14 days. A member of Alamo Lodge No. 122, F. & A. M. Friends are invited to attend services at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, Saturday, December 9, 1939, at 3:30 o'clock p.m. Friends may call at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kendric French, 5405 Dover Street, Oakland, until noon Saturday."
