Reed, 1893–1976 Waterloo attorney Harry M. Reed, 83, who had practiced law in Waterloo since 1915, passed away on Wed., Aug. 25, 1975, following a lengthy lung-related illness. Services were held Aug. 27 at First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Reed was born Jan. 15, 1893, in Waterloo, to Samuel B. and Belle (Coughtry) Reed. He attended East Waterloo Schools and graduated from East High in 1910. He played on the East football team that defeated West High 5-0 in their first football game in 1909. Mr. Reed graduated from the Iowa Law School with a degree of L.L.B. in 1915. He married Elizabeth Black in Waterloo on Dec. 30, 1920. Survivors include his wife, and a son, Wallace B. Reed, of 2522 Sunset Blvd., Cedar Falls. Among those preceding him in death was another son, Harry M. Reed, Jr., who was killed in action in France in February 1945 and is buried there. He has a cenotaph near his parents at Memorial Park Cemetery (see here). Mr. Reed practiced law in Waterloo beginning in 1915 when he joined his father in practice as part of the firm of S.B. Reed and J.S. Tuthill. He was later associated with Glenn B. Beers for 25 years until Mr. Beers' death. He was a member of the firm Reed, Merner, Sindlinger, Baker & Sabbath. Mr. Reed's father became a member of the Waterloo Bar in 1891. He, his father and son, Wallace B. Reed, have been in continuous practice of law for 85 years. During World War I, Mr. Rees was in the field artillery officer training school at the termination of hostilities and was a Major in the Air Force during World War II. He was City Attorney for Waterloo from 1922 to 1926, and served as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa from 1931 to 1934. Mr. Reed was a charter member of Becker-Chapman Post 139 of the American Legion and served as its first commander and again in 1929. He was a member of the Library Board for 25 years and served as its chairman for 11 years. He was also a board member of several civic groups and businesses in the community.
