Description	:	The Spanish influenza claimed its first victim here Saturday night when Harry Smith died at his home southeast of town. He was stricken several days ago with influenza and while very sick seemed to be getting along satisfactorily until he contracted pneumonia. In his weakened condition brought about by the influenza, he was unable to withstand the relapse and passed away Saturday night. Harry Richard Smith was born August 1, 1886, at Arlington, Iowa. When five years of age he moved with his parents to Boone county, Nebraska, where he has since made his home. On November 14th, 1907 he was united in marriage to Miss Maude Johnson, at St. Edward. To this union were born four children, all of whom are living except Richard, who died when a baby. For some time, until just recently, Mr. Smith was engaged in the cement business. This past summer he entered the employ of the Albion Electric Light Company and moved his family to the power plant southeast of town. Mr. Smith leaves to mourn his death, his wife and three little children, two brothers and four sisters, together with a large number of friends. Because of the contagious nature of the disease, funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the yard. They were conducted by Rev. Main of the Methodist church and the body was laid to rest in Rose Hill cemetery. (Albion Weekly News – Albion, Nebraska – October 24, 1918)
