Persons The community was startled Tuesday noon to hear that Harry Persons, one of the old and well known residents of the county, had died at his home in the northwest part of town, following an illness lasting only a few days. Mr. Persons took sick Tuesday of last week, typhoid-pneumonia developing within a few hours. While the snow was on the ground Mr. Persons spent much of time sleigh-riding and Monday evening took a crowd of high school young people for a bob-sled ride. During the trip the sled was upset and Mr. Persons sustained a slight strain in his shoulder and chest and also got considerably warmed up while righting the sled. It is thought he took cold and this was what precipitated his illness. He had two former attacks of pneumonia and his health for the past two years has not been of the best. His death came as a shock to the community as it was not generally known that he was seriously sick. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian church, the Royal Highlanders, of which the deceased was a prominent member, having charge of the services. Rev. C. H. Moehlmann, pastor of the Baptist church, will preach the sermon. Harry Valentine Persons was born in Warren, Washington county, Vermont, June 2, 1851, and was, therefore, 54 years, 9 months and 25 days old. He resided in Vermont until the spring of 1871 when he came to Merrick county (Nebraska). For a year or two after coming here he assisted his father who was then engaged in the mercantile business. April 5, 1873, he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Reynolds and they took up their home on the farm about eight miles northwest of town which he homesteaded. Nine children were born to them, seven of whom are living- Miss. Gertrude, of Sheridan, Wyoming; Euclid, of Whiting, Kansas; Mrs. Bird Gilmore, Ernest, Ethel, Theda and Harry, Jr., all residing here. In 1902 Mr. Persons sold his homestead to J. H. Jefferson, retaining 320 acres upon which he erected a nice home. In 1903, owing to ill health and a desire to reduce his business cares, he moved to Central City, purchasing a home in a few months after coming to town. Mr. Persons was a member of the Presbyterian church and bore the respect of a wide circle of friends. He was kind hearted and liberal in his family relations, generous and accommodating to neighbors and business associates. The sympathy of the entire community will be extended to the prostrated wife and grief stricken children.
