Swayzee Press / Friday, April 5, 1918 Harry White was born at Springdale, Pa., October 10, 1891; died at Base Hospital, Camp Upton, Long Island, March 27, 1918, age 26 years, 5 months and 17 days. He lived in Swayzee and vicinity practically all his life, having graduated from the Swayzee High School in 1911. When the call came for men to protect the Stars and Stripes, Harry did not wait to be drafted, but volunteered his services and enlisted in the Medical Corps on June 4, 1917. He was assigned to Ambulance Co. 307, Sanitary Train 302 (77th Division.) He began receiving promotions almost immediately after entering the service and at the beginning of his illness had just received his warrant for 1st Sergeant, although he had been filling that position for several months. Harry was a good boy and a manly man. He sought to evade no duty and accepted every responsibility placed upon him. He stood for everything that makes a splendid citizen and a good soldier and his character was nobility itself. To his associates he was always courteous and just and never demanded of them that which he was unwilling to give. Of his immediate family his mother, Mrs. Ollie White and sister, Mrs. Anna Pence; survive him. He also leaves to mourn his loss Grandma Hummell, now in California, Grandma White of Pittsburgh, Pa., and a host of relatives and friends. While nothing we could say would add to his worth, now that he is gone, we would add this tribute: Simple, free and kind, he made everyone his friend. Candid and sincere, he practiced what he preached, but this loved and loving young soldier halted in life's morning, for on his journey on life's highway, he had not reached the highest point, but being weary for a moment fell asleep.
