Mr. Colvin was a member of the Sioux City Fire Department for 43 years before retiring as a captain, 1 October 1955. He became a fireman 1 November 1912, & was promoted to junior captain 1 June 1919. Read More	Ex - Fire Captain Dies Here Harry W. COLVIN, 85, 418 W. First St., retired fire captain, died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital after a long illness. Mr. Colvin was a member of the Sioux City Fire Department for 43 years before retiring as a captain, 1 October 1955. He became a fireman 1 November 1912, & was promoted to junior captain 1 June 1919. A month later he was promoted to senior captain. Mr. Colvin also was known as a early days steamboat captain & pilot on the Missouri River. At the age of 14, he was a rowing a skiff & carrying rods for government surveyors on the river. He captained a boat on the Missouri River between Sioux City & St. Louis. He spent 10 years on the river & prior to 1912 he served 4 years with the Sioux City Police Department. Mr. Colvin was born 28 August 1882 in Sioux City & was a lifelong resident. He married Nellie MARSH 25 July 1917, in South Sioux City. He was a member of Whitfield Methodist Church, the Sioux City Firemen's Association & the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Survivors include the widow; a son, Robert COLVIN of Delavan, Wis.; a daughter, Hazel, Mrs. George DOMNISSE, of Sioux Falls; and 6 grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Manning O'Toole Funeral Home. The Rev. Harold V. Bartz of Whitfield Methodist Church will officiate & burial will be in Floyd Park Cemetery. Pallbearers, all firemen, will be Edwin Gould, John Donovan, Clarence Grasma, Marvin Rochester, Don G. Thompson, & Sidney Sidmore. Honorary pallbearers will be Lawrence Mattison, Louis McMahon, Frank Schwartzmeyer, Emil Solvsberg, Arthur Thiel & James Herman. source: Sioux City Journal
