Hartley Gifford Walter was born Feb. 24, 1918 at White Earth, ND to Earl and Flora (Whittemore) Walter. He was raised and attended school at Bowbells, ND where he graduated from high school. He married Irene Johnson on March 19, 1936. He operated a shoe repair business in Columbus, ND. The couple moved to Fargo where Hartley began his career at the Fargo Fire Department in 1942, he entered the Navy in 1944 and was discharged in 1946. Hartley returned to the Fargo Fire Department. He was promoted to Captain in 1953 and retired in 1969 after 27 years with the department. Hartley began selling Fire Apparatus for Forstner Fire Apparatus of Madelia, MN in 1956 until 1991. Irene passed away in 1987. On Aug. 26, 1989 Hartley and Carmen (Marvel) were married. Hartley is known for his love of family and friends. He respected and loved the great outdoors. He is known for his keen sense of humor and compassionate heart. In later years he enjoyed his retirement on Big Cormorant Lake (Audubon, MN) where he spent many hours of fishing, especially with his grandchildren. Hartley shared his cooking talents, gleaned in the Nacy, with many. He enjoyed cooking at the Eagles. He was a member of Fargo Firefighter's Local 642, Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Legion, Alzheimer's Support Group, active member of Congregational Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene; son, Rock; great grandson, Lucas Walter and sister, Verna Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Carmen of Audubon; three sons, Jerry (Pat) of Bertram, TX, Dirk (Dawn) of Scottsdale, AZ and Noel (Karen) of Audubon, MN; two step-sons, Tony (Shelly) Marvel of Savage, MN, Ron (Marchelle) Marvel of Fergus Falls, MN; two step daughters, Sheila (Jerrod) Wamre of Hawley, MN, Teresa (Kory) Mosher of Prior Lake, MN; 19 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, one brother, Henry (Marian) of Yuma, AZ; four sisters, Enid Cranston of Whitler, CA, Vida Hanson of Seattle, WA, Susan McIntyre of Harwood, ND and Ardis Sherwood of Fargo, ND.
