Hartwig Lohse, Sr., died at the home of his son, Hartwig Lohse, Jr., at Judith, Mont., June 27, 1915, in the 81st year of his age. Mr. Lohse was born in Holstein, Germany, May 28, 1835, and was united in marriage to Margaret Meyer in 1862. This union was blessed with four sons, Hartwig, Jr., Henry, John and William, all of whom are still living and engaged in the farming and stock-raising business in this state. Mrs. Lohse was called away in Germany in 1888, and in 1891 Mr. Lohse and son, Hartwig, Jr., emigrated to the United States, coming to Big Sandy, Mont., where both worked on the sheep ranch of Johannes Lehfeldt until 1893, when they took up land and engaged in the sheep business for themselves. Later, going out of the sheep business, they bought cattle and engaged in farming, devoting their attention particularly to the raising of alfalfa seed, in which they were very successful, Hartwig Lohse, Jr., now having one of the very best farms in the section. Mr. Lohse made his home with his son, Hartwig, Jr., since his immigration to this country. Hartwig Lohse, Sr., never required the attention of a physician until the very last month of his life, and those who knew him in health and vigor can hardly realize that death has called him away in so short a time. Mr. Lohse was a kind neighbor, and good father to his motherless boys, and was liked and respected by all who knew him and the Mountaineer and all who knew the deceased join in sorrow for his taking away and in sympathy for the bereaved relatives. The funeral was held yesterday from the Hartwig Lohse, Jr., home, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Ernest Wachsmuth, pastor of the German Lutheran Church in Great Falls, and burial was made in the home burial ground. ---- Havre Plaindealer (MT), 3 July 1915 On Monday afternoon Holland and Son shipped a casket to Big Sandy for Hartwig Lohse, Sr., who died at Judith Sunday night. The deceased was 81 years of age and had been a resident of this section of the state for a good many years. He was a highly respected citizen and his death comes as a severe shock to his many friends.
