Nickell, Nov. 15, 1924-Nov. 1, 2007, Harvey A. Nickell, 82, of 1149 W. Sixth St., Rochester, died at 8:20 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at Life Care Center, Rochester. His health was failing for two years. Born in Fulton County, he was the son of James and Minnie Ward Nickell. He lived his entire life in this community. He married Vandetta P. Melton on Aug. 31, 1946, in Rochester. She died on Aug. 28, 1995. A U.S. Navy veteran, he worked as a supervisor at Torx for 37 years. He belonged to First Christian Church and Pheasants Forever and had been a member of LeRoy Shelton American Legion, Moose Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Harvey enjoyed many outdoor activities. As an American sportsman, he hunted in the backwoods of Ontario, Canada, once bagging a 1,800-pound cow moose. Harvey's most productive visit to Canada netted 13 deer, a moose and two black bears, all of this with the collaborative efforts of his hunting buddies. He also enjoyed deep sea fishing off the California coast. As an avid NFL fan, Harvey attended two Super Bowls, in Miami and San Francisco. He is survived by two sons, Richard L. Nickell and Ronald L. Nickell and wife Tina, all of Rochester; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Nickell, Port Charlotte, Fla.; five grandchildren, Brandon Nickell, Melissa and Alisha Nickell, James and Chad Ullery of Port Charlotte, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Kelsy, Destiney, Chevy Lee, Randi, Garrett, Codi, Makayla, Arianna, Alexis, Laney and Caden; great-great-grandson, Matthew; a sister, Helen Kelly, Rochester; and a brother, B. R. Nickell, Logansport. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Irene Hunter; and three brothers, Ward Nickell, Elwood Pieratt and Omar Pieratt. His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Woody Slade officiating. Burial will be at Rochester IOOF Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the LeRoy Shelton American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service Saturday. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or the 358 Alzheimer's Association.
