Collins Papillion Lawyer, 83, Held Sarpy Posts (The World Herald News Service) Papillion, Nebr.-Harvey A. Collins, 83, attorney and former Sarpy County official died Sunday at his home after suffering a heart attack. In recent years he had been engaged in law practice with his son Gerald in South Omaha. Mr. Collins served as Sarpy County Attorney for eight years, as County Judge for 12 years and as School Superintendent for several years. During his years in the County Bench he was also known as the "marrying judge." From June 30, 1942, to July 1, 1943, he preformed 1,151 marriages at the Sarpy County Courthouse. It was the peak year. A new Nebraska health certificate law went into effect late in 1943, ending Papillion's era as a Gretna Green. Besides his son Gerald, his wife Daisy; son, Wayne, Santa Fe, NM, and daughter, Mrs. Miriam Cockrell, Loveland, CO., also survive. (Note: Thanks to Richard Carle for the following information!) Here are some notes from family records, I copied the obituary that was on the memorial. Heart disease, passed away at home Moved to Chase Co., Nebraska on 1 February 1893. Resided on a farm eight miles south of Champion, Nebraska. Moved to Sarpy Co., Nebraska in 1903. He taught school at Ft. Crook, near Bellevue, Sarpy Co., Nebraska in about 1903. Moved to Papillion, Sarpy Co., Nebraska in 1907 Sharpy Co., School Superintendent in 1907 Moved to Wauneta, Chase Co., Nebraska in 1910 Served as Co., Superintendent for about sixteen years and then became a lawyer, practicing law in Papillion and South Omaha Served as Co., Attorney, Sarpy Co., 1922 to 1926 Served as a Judge in Sarpy Co., for fourteen years. beginning in 1934. Served as Justice of the Peace and performed many marriages. In 1942 he married over 1400 couples. He performed over 9000 marriages during his term as Justice of the Peace. Purchased his first automobile in 1920 In 1899, he enrolled in Fremont Normal School, a Nebraska state teachers college in Fremont, Nebraska. Tremont Normal School is now known as Midlands College. He attended classes at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and graduated from Fremont Normal. He attended law school at Creighton University.
