Description	:	Harvey Fredrick Marx was born five miles northeast of Iroquois, SD, on March 13, 1907, the son of the late John Marx and Bertha Hicke Marx. Read More	Harvey Fredrick Marx was born five miles northeast of Iroquois, SD, on March 13, 1907, the son of the late John Marx and Bertha Hicke Marx. He lived his entire life in South Dakota, and most of those years in the Manchester area. From 1909 to 1911, the family lived on a homestead in Pennington County. Harvey married Lucille Stemple of the Bancroft vicinity on November 19, 1932. In 1933, the couple moved to the town of Manchester, SD, where they lived for 67 years. He joined Lucy as a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in De Smet in July of 2000. In addition to farming and ranching, Harv and Lucy owned or operated several businesses in their hometown, including a restaurant, lumberyard, and a grocery store. Marx Grocery, which they ran from 1937 to 1946, became a center of communication for the community, as people from miles around came to catch up on the news. The late pioneer painter, Harvey Dunn, spent hours in the store visiting with people, the same people who often graced his celebrated paintings. Together, the couple ministered to the people in their community through the Great Depression and the remaining decades of the 20th Century. From 1981 to 2000, Harvey led the weekly Songfest at the Good Samaritan Center in De Smet, and was named "Volunteer of the Year" on more than one occasion. He served for many years as an election official and as a member of the Manchester Township School Board. He was a pallbearer for the late Grace (Ingalls) Dow, who became famous in books written by her sister, Laura Ingalls Wilder. Harv and Lucy attended the Manchester Orthodox Presbyterian Church, where he took care of the church building. They later attended the Bancroft Church. Harvey Marx, a product of Manchester Township's Ferguson School, was a self-taught naturalist, horticulturist, meteorologist, photographer, historian, and singer. He and his wife were often quoted in books and articles tracing the history of the community. His stories about working WPA, riding the rails seeking work during part of the Great Depression, and the great changes he had seen in farming, technology, and transportation were captivating. Perhaps the avocation that brought him and everyone around him the greatest pleasure was singing. Often called the "Man with the Golden Voice", he not only sang at the Good Samaritan Center, at church, and other venues, but his recordings and interviews were also heard on a number of South Dakota radio stations. Harv and Lucy traveled widely, visiting all 50 United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. They were among the first million passengers to travel on the Boeing 747. In addition, they spent several weeks each year visiting their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, most recently in the Phoenix, Omaha, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. areas. Grateful for having shared his life were his wife of 68 years, Lucille, De Smet; two children, Gail Eberlein, Scottsdale, AZ; and Gary Marx, and his wife, Judy, Vienna, VA; one brother, Albert Marx, Huron, SD; four grandchildren, John Marx, and his wife, Ramona, Los Angeles, CA; Daniel Marx, and his wife, Cate, Arlington, VA; Chad Eberlein, and his wife, Heike, Omaha, NE; and Philip Eberlein, New York, NY; and two great-grandchildren, Monique and Jacob Eberlein, Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bertha, and three brothers, Elmer, Earl, and Herbert. His life is celebrated by a host of family and friends. Memorial contributions will be offered to the Bancroft Orthodox Presbyterian Church
