Harvey Henry Ator was born in Plentywood, Montana on August 13, 1928. He was the first of three sons born to Henry and Rachel (Alexander) Ator. He attended school in Antelope and Plentywood. Harvey lived his entire life on the farm his father homesteaded. On October 23, 1949 Harvey married the love of his life, Mary Botkin, and she joined him on the farm. The two of them raised children, cattle, chickens, pigs and small grains. In the late 60's and early 70's, Harvey, Roger Anderson, George Munson and the kids’ custom combined and hayed. In 1972, Harvey and Mary began processing beef and pork in their basement. They eventually converted the farm shop into a meat processing plant - “Ator’s Processing.” Chris became the meat cutter and Harvey and Tom did the butchering. Everyone pitched in on “chicken picking day.” Over the next 30 years, “the shop” became the neighborhood gathering place for customers, neighbors and friends at coffee time. Everyone knew the coffee was always fresh and Mary’s cookies were always delicious! Prior to operating his own business, Harvey worked for Plentywood Electric and John Hallesy. Harvey was dedicated to ensuring his children got to school and their activities. In the early years, there was no bus route so he or Mary drove the kids to and from school every day. Later if the bus didn’t run due to weather, Harvey made sure the kids got to school even if it meant going off road. When the boys started to play basketball, they remember Harvey and Gus Abenroth driving them to their away games in the years before the school sent a bus. Harvey was at his best when he was with Mary. Together they served on the Democratic Committee for many years. Mary, a Registered Nurse at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home for 40 years, always worked Christmas Eve. She would gather the residents and read them the Christmas story. Then Santa (aka Harvey) and their children would hand out gifts to the residents. When Mary became ill with pulmonary fibrosis, Harvey became her devoted care-giver and made sure she was able to remain on the farm until she died in November of 2001. Harvey was a retired member of the Montana National Guard and was well know throughout the state for his cooking. He was the head cook for the local guard unit as well as the annual two week camp. He was very proud of his families’ strong military tradition – three generations of Ator’s have served iin the National Guard, Army, Navy and Air Force. Harvey retired in 1988 after 35 years of service. Harvey was a people person. He loved to visit. Any activity that gave him an opportunity to spend time with his family and friends was an opportunity worth taking. Long after he no longer actively worked in the processing plant, he was still there at coffee time. He truly enjoyed the time he spent at the Vet’s Club with his “guard buddies.” Whether it was smear at the Blue Moon with old friends or poker with his grandchildren, Harvey was always ready for a game of cards. Harvey, 85, died on December 12th in the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home surrounded by family and friends He is survived by his six children and their families: Mike (Rose) of Palm Coast, Florida; Karen (Ed) Milewski of Lindale, Texas; Dale of Canon City, Colorado; Chris (Linda) of Plentywood; Tom of Plentywood; and, Valita (Kurt) Nelson of Scobey. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; his brother Lowell of Plentywood; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Botkin of Twin Falls, Idaho He was preceded in death by Mary; his brother and sister-in-law Vernon and Ramona Ator; a sister-in-law Geraldine Ator; and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Ator.
