Description	:	Harvey L. Swan was born December 21, 1910, the son of Andrew Harvey Swan and Parry Lee (Demarcus) Swan who lived on a farm near Riverdale, Kansas. Harvey attended Wellington, Kansas High School until his Father's health failed and he had to take over the farming. During Harvey's teenage years, the family did a lot of butchering of hogs, cattle and rabbits; then peddled the meat to Wellington and Wichita residents. Swan was born December 21, 1910, the son of Andrew Harvey Swan and Parry Lee (Demarcus) Swan who lived on a farm near Riverdale, Kansas. Harvey attended Wellington, Kansas High School until his Father's health failed and he had to take over the farming. During Harvey's teenage years, the family did a lot of butchering of hogs, cattle and rabbits; then peddled the meat to Wellington and Wichita residents. Harvey has used this butchering ability all through the years for his own benefit and to help and teach others in the Mulvane area. In the early spring of 1936, Harvey started his career with the Standard Oil Co. by working for Carl Ash, a sales agent in the Wellington area. He worked during the busy season for two years. January 24, 1938, Harvey moved to Mulvane to begin a steady job with the Standard Oil Company, which was to continue until his retirement on January 31, 1973. It was in June, 1936, Harvey met Ruth Dible, whose farmer parents lived ten miles southwest of Wellington. Harvey and Ruth were married May 4, 1940. Harvey and Ruth had two children, a daughter Nancy (Tom) Hayselden, a graduate of Kansas State Teacher's College in 1964. Nancy and Tom have two girls and two boys. Harvey and Ruth also have a son Charles who graduated from Southwestern College in June 1973. Charles has been a very talented floral designer most all of his life. The voters of the City of Mulvane elected Harvey as their mayor in the 1949 election. He served four terms as mayor; later one term as councilman, and a few years as a member of the Planning Commission. Harvey held many responsible positions in the Methodist Church including District Steward several years, as well as finance chairman and currently is a member of the administrative board. He has enjoyed preparing breakfasts for the Methodist Men's group. Harvey has been an active officer in the Mulvane Masonic Lodge – having been Worshipful Master in 1966. The following year he was elected treasurer, an office he still holds. He was District Deputy Grand Master and later area coordinator at large for the Grand Lodge for 37 lodges in the southern counties of Kansas. He served as Chairman of the Credentials Committee of the Grand Lodge of Kansas for the 1976-1977 term, appointed by the Most Worshipful Grand Master, Ralph D. Walker of Sharon Springs, Kansas. Harvey was Worthy Patron of Fern Chapter, Order of the Eastern Start in 1948 and again in 1967. He served on the Rainbow Advisory Board several years. Harvey was president of the Mulvane Golden Age Club in 1975 and 1977. Harvey was a member of the Mulvane Historical Society, and also the Sumner County Historical Society. Since his retirement, Harvey has devoted much time to community and civic activities, especially the Chamber of Commerce and the Mulvane Lions Club. In the spring and summer months he enjoyed gardening and helping his cousin with the wheat harvest, then working the ground and planting the wheat again. Once in a while he even wets a fish hook. For many years, Harvey has enjoyed being Santa Claus during the Christmas Season. Harvey has always been concerned about the welfare of his fellow man. Harvey passed from this life on December 1, 1997.
