He was born Feb. 6, 1909, in Frederick County, a son of the late John and Daisy Eyler Toms. He was a dairy farmer most of his life, and later worked at the N.Z. Cramer hardware for 29 years, retiring in 1972. He also worked part-time for Turtle Top in Woodsboro. He was a resident of the LeGore area until eight months ago when he became a resident of the Citizens Nursing Home. He and his wife celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Aug. 18, 1989. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Trout Toms; four daughters, Alice Callari, of Taneytown, Shirley Young, of Keysville, Terry Putman, of Walkersville, and Wanda Stokes, of Frederick; four sons, Harvey M, Toms Jr., of Woodsboro, James L. Toms, of Frederick, Eugene H. Toms, of LeGore, and Michael W. Toms, of Clinton; three sisters, Lena Blume, of Keymar, Dorothy Snyder, of Middleburg, and Margaret Lochner, of Mount Pleasant; two brothers, Ralph H. Toms, of Taneytown, and Elmer W. Toms, of Frederick; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Stacey Lynn Putnam. The family will receive friends at the Woodsboro funeral home of D.D. Hartzler, on Monday, Aug. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Frederick Horner, pastor of the Wakefield Valley Bible Church, officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery, LeGore.
