Wherry, 85, resident of Story county for 40 years, were held from the Morfoot-Dixon Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. with Rev. E.P. Windman of Memorial Lutheran church officiating at the last rites. Mrs. Harold Handsaker and Mrs. Howard Hilburn sang as a duet, "It Is Well With May Soul" and "Face to Face" with Mrs. John Picht as accompanist. Wherry, son of Isaac and Katherine Turkle Wherry was born March 12, 1865 in a log cabin near Oxford Junction, Iowa. He passed away at Holy Family Hospital, Estherville, Iowa, September 30, 1950, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 18 days. He spent his boyhood and early manhood in Jones County, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Annie Mitchell on February 28, 1900, and moved to a farm near Fernald, Iowa. To this marriage three children were born--Mitchell of Evansville, Indiana, Mrs. Lillian Thiel of Armstrong, Iowa, and Mrs. Naomi Rendleman of Bellwood, Illinois. The children's mother passed away November 9, 1913. On January 24, 1918 he was united in marriage to Emma Mitchell who preceded him in death on March 17, 1940. Since 1940 he has made his home with his daughter Mrs. Lillian Thiel in Armstrong, Iowa. He has always been very active in social, civic and religious activities in the communities in which he lived. He will long be remembered as an outstanding young people's Sunday School teacher, having taught Sunday School classes for over 55 years. He was faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Fernald. He will be remembered as a militant sponsor of the Fernald Consolidated School and as a circle leader in many of the community activities. He leaves to mourn his death his three children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Chas. Thomas and Mrs. Ira Vail are nieces of the deceased.
