The peaceful slumber of the town was disturbed Thursday morning about one o'clock by the alarm of fire which was found to be one of the larger tenant houses on Cotton Mill Hill. The house was occupied by the families of Ki Davis and Frank Blazer. The fire originated in the kitchen of the Davis apartment and was well under way when first discovered and was spreading very rapidly. The peaceful slumber of the town was disturbed Thursday morning about one o'clock by the alarm of fire which was found to be one of the larger tenant houses on Cotton Mill Hill. The house was occupied by the families of Ki Davis and Frank Blazer. The fire originated in the kitchen of the Davis apartment and was well under way when first discovered and was spreading very rapidly. The first work was to try to get all persons out of the house, and they were all roused up and out hurriedly, some gathering such as they could hold of while others barely got out without anything. Mrs. Davis thought of her sewing machine and taking it on her shoulder carried it down stairs and out of the house saving it. Hattie Blazer, a 14 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Blazer, was soon found to be missing and every effort was made to get back into the house to find her, but the fire had gained such headway that it meant death to go in. Hattie was sleeping up-stairs, and it is supposed that when she came down stairs that she started out through the kitchen which was ablaze and was suffocated by the fire and smoke, as a small part of the charred remains were found where the kitchen stood.
