Hattie was the sister of the following siblings, Bessie Jane, Maynard A, Jesse R, Matilda V. and Monroe R. Marshall. (This list of siblings is probably incomplete.) Hattie Mae married Oscar Henry Rice on 13 March 1912. They were the parents of the following children, Bertha Irene "Sis" Rice/Eaton, Lenora Irene Rice/Hartman/Lasiter, Delmus Wesley Rice, Ellis "Ira" Thomas Rice, Merhl Henry Rice and Garnett Leo Rice. On Thanksgiving morning 1934, Hattie was eletrocuted during a butchering on the Edward Houck farm , near Ceresville where her brother Maynard Marshall was a tenant. She picked up an ordinary brass electric light socket while participating in the butchering and was electrocuted while her husband, Oscar and children looked on helpless to aid and as a result death occured. Dr H.P. Fahrney, this city was summuned to the scene and she was pronounced dead due to electrocution. Hattie her shoes and feet dampened by the early morning wetness when she grasped the socket formed a perfect conductor for the approximately 110 volts of current which under ordinary circumstances not be sufficient to cause serious injury. Hattie and family had arrived early in the morning and in order to provide sufficient illumination a drop cord was utilized from the summer kitchen, running to the kettles being used in the butchering. After daylight hattie felt that the cord was in the way made the attenpt to remove it, and upon grasping the socket immeatelly recived the shock as others at the butchering cried to her to drop it Hattie screamed, I can't let go and collapsed.Wihtin a few minutes and it is believed before she was carried to the house , she was dead. The accident happened about 7:30 A.M.. It was stated that she had no burns on her hands or body what-so-ever from the shock, which from all indications,resulted from the early morning wetness. Relatives stated that she had not previously been ill and been in her usal spirits prior to the unfortunate occurance.
