To all who had become acquainted with her in her later years she was one who lived in genial thoughtfulness of all her friends as she tended the little nursery she owned in the northwest part of town. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles W. Seymour. She was born in York Township March 22, 1868. Her education was received in Williamsburg. She was twice married. Her first marriage was to Harley S. Ransom Oct 13, 1891. Mr. Ransom died November 24, 1895. For four years prior to his death Mr. and Mrs. Ransom conducted a store in Conroy. Following the death of her husband she came to Williamsburg with her two children and for a time clerked in the dry goods and millinery store of Mrs. E. Humphrey. She and her children made their home with her mother and sister. Later she became a clerk in the local post office and twice served as deputy postmaster. April 16, 1902 she was united in marriage with Jacob A. Tanner. Mr. Tanner passed away in January 1934. It was in 1925 that she and her husband started a nursery known as the Williamsburg Nursery and Mrs. Tanner continued it operation after the death of Mr. Tanner and up to within a years or so of her death. She was a life-long member of the Presbyterian church and had been from time through the years leader of the Junior Christian Endeavor and a choir member. Her lodge memberships were with the Rebekahs and the Pythian Sisters. For several years she taught school in York Township. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. E. E. Enochson of Williamburg, and by her son James Harley of Lexington, Kentucky who are her children by her first marriage. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ This story is about a woman who's love, and knowledge of flowers, shrubs and human nature is extremely keen. Born in the year 1868, on the old Orrin Castle farm near Williamsburg, Mrs. Tanner may well be considered a lifelong resident and prominent citizen of this community. Her schooling began at the old Troy No. 6 schoolhouse and upon completion of her scholarly duties there she enrolled for several terms at the "Academy" in Iowa City, where she pursued a general academic course. When asked about her schooling in Iowa City she explained that schools in those days offered mostly courses pertaining to the general trends of that period, English, Arithmetic, and the general study courses. In those days the opportunity to acquire a a fine education rarely presented itself. Mrs. Tanner told me, however, that those terms she spent in attendance at the Academy were extremely beneficial to her because, she learned more about life, meeting people and being away from home and loves ones; she agrees with the numerous philosophers modern and ancient, who surmised and believed that an education can not be evaluated in dollars and cents, but that the experience and knowledge one derives from being "on your own," is of epic value. After the Academy Mrs, Tanner came back to Williamsburg, and was employed in Mrs. Humphrey's millinery store for several years. Mrs. Tanner was employed as Postmistriss from 1890-1896. When Mr. Tanner was in the hospital recovering from a nervous breakdown, he walked through the gardens of the hospital and had to to ask questions concerning the various plants and flowers which grew there, consequently his interest grew, and the time came, through much study and concentration, that he knew the names of most of the things which grew there. His wife, who had admired nature's works for years, was also a great help to him because she was already familiar with many of the intricacies of the nursery business. Soon Mr. Tanner recovered sufficiently to return home to Williamsburg where he and his wife established the Tanner Nursery in 1925, and continued operations together until Mr. Tanner's death in 1934. Since then Mrs. Tanner has been carrying on her work alone. Mrs. Tanner also employed her talents in writing poetry.
