According to the 1910 U.S. Census, she had one other sibling that died. Her mother remarried in 1912, Richard Carrington Hall, and to this union, her half-brother, Rudolph Edmund Hall was born on May 12, 1912. He died at the age of 4 months old from broncho-pneumonia. On Jan. 6, 1913, her mother passed away and she was raised by, Frank Lee Fleenor, a locomotive railroad engineer, and his wife Mary Belle Groseclose Fleenor. In her youth, she was an active member of Y.W.A group at First Baptist Church and graduated from Appalachia High School in 1930. Probably during the summer of 1929, she met Walton Ray Sutton, a student at N.C. State University, who was working during the summer as a Bible salesman in Virginia. Their engagement was announced on July 9, 1930 and they were married at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Fleenors, on Thursday, August 28th. Wedding Announcement: "The ceremony was performed by Dr. W.L. Brock, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Appalachia before a beautifully improvised altar in the living room. Prior to the ceremony, Miss. Hazel Quinley, soloist, Mrs. Blaine Gibbs, pianist, and Jack Gibbs, violinist, gave a program of wedding music. The bride and groom entered unattended and were met at the alter by Dr. Brock. The ring ceremony was used. Walton Ray Sutton, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. B.L. Sutton of Goldsboro, N.C. He is a graduate of Rosewood high school and the State Teachers College of Raleigh, N.C., receiving his B.S. degree." They shortly moved and raised their family in Wayne and Kinston County, where he worked as an agricultural education teacher at the local high schools.
