Additional information about Hazel, provided by step-son, Dennis Hemphill: After Hazel's Wapello High School graduation in 1922, she began her teaching career at Oakland Country School, west of Wapello. She later taught at Victory School, Louisa County, both before her first marriage and later as her children were growing up. She took pride in the fact that she had attended Victory School for 8 years and had also taught there for 8 years. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College to complete courses for her teaching certificate renewal. Her first marriage was to Russell Eubanks on December 19, 1925. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one daughter, Thelma Edwards. Her funeral was officiated by the Rev. Dick Reynolds of the Mediapolis Presbyterian Church.
