Hazel Bohlken of Iowa City, and formerly of Monticello, died Sunday, April 21, 2002 at the Greenwood Manor Care Center, Iowa City, following an extended illness. Survivors are three sons, Phil (Kathy) Caldwell of Idaho, Dave (Rebecca) of Iowa City and Daniel (Sandy) of Forest Grove, Ore.; nine grandchilren; Jennifer, Greg, Caitlin, Rachael, Miriam, Rebekah, Matthew (Megan) Bohlken, Cheryl (Chris) Thompson, Anna (Dan) Lohrer, a brother, Dan (Pat) Barren of Los Angeles, Calif., and a sister -in- law, Ellen Hanken. Hazel Florence Stone was born Nov. 13, 1918, in San Francisco, Calif., the daughter of Bert and Hazel Brown Stone. She graduated from Central High School in Tulsa Okla., in 1936. She attended the University of Tulsa, pre-Med and took her nurse's training through Morningside Hospital in Tulsa. Hazel Barren and Henry G. Bohlken were married February 14, 1942, at St. John's Lutheran Church. The couple farmed on the Bohlken family farm. She was employed at John McDonald Hospital in Monticello, the Anamosa Community Hospital, and for Dr. Aaron Randolph in Anamosa. In later years, she was a nurse at Camp Courageous. The couple moved to Iowa City in 1989. Memorials may be made to the Iowa City Hospice or Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
