The community was shocked Saturday following the noon hour when the news spread that Mrs. D.H. Bauman had died at Mercy Hospital. Mrs. Bauman had undergone a serious operation for hernia two weeks ago, but it was thought she was getting along as well as could be expected under the circumstances. Her mother, Mrs. G H. Gruhn, and sister, Mrs. Edith Martin, had returned to their homes in Malcom and Des Moines recently, thinking she was out of danger. Mrs. Bauman was a bride of but two months, having been married to Postmaster Bauman that long ago in Rochester, Minn. The young people had just gone to housekeeping on the north side and were barely settled in their new home. Her passing will be a terrible shock to the sorrowing husband and relatives to whom the future held high hopes and the deepest sympathy of the entire community will be extended to them. Hazel Josephine Gruhn was born in Malcolm, Iowa, twenty eight years ago and was a graduate of Wesleyan Hospital training school for nurses, of Chicago. She came to Webster City in June 1916 as a private nurse and in October was employed as a school nurse of the Webster City schools. She served the public in this capacity until Jan. 1, 1917, two months before her marriage. Mrs. Bauman leaves a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Gruhn, of Malcolm, Iowa, and four sisters and five brothers, one of whom is in the Navy. She was well known here and in her home town and her untimely passing will cause grief to friends both in this city and elsewhere. The remains of the late Mrs. D.H. Bauman were taken to Malcom Sunday for burial at the old home. Her father and brother and sister arrived here in the morning and a brief funeral service was held in the afternoon at 3:30 at the Bauman home on the north side with Rev Arthur Metcalf in charge. The post office employees and rural mail carriers attended the service in a body. The husband of the deceased and his sister, Mrs. Arthur Whitfield, of Sioux City, who is here on a visit, and also the nurse who cared for Mrs. Bauman during her illness at the hospital. Mrs. King accompanied the body to Malcom with the father, brother and sister and the final funeral services were held today at that place.
