Description	:	Our mother, Hazel Juliet Oie Ambroson, was born on August 19, 1916 to Norwegian immigrants John and Goldie (Stoen) Oie on the Andrew Stoen farm in Union County, South Dakota. She entered this life with her twin sister Helen. They joined brothers Enoch, Kermit, and Marvid. South Dakota had been a state only 27 years, World War I was raging, Woodrow Wilson was president, and there were no Minnesota Twins. Hazel graduated from Alcester High School in Alcester, South Dakota in 1937 and from Springfield Normal School in Springfield, South Dakota in 1940, where she earned her teaching certificate. Hazel graduated from Alcester High School in Alcester, South Dakota in 1937 and from Springfield Normal School in Springfield, South Dakota in 1940, where she earned her teaching certificate. Hazel loved music and taught herself to play the piano. When she asked for music lessons from the music teacher at Springfield Normal School, the teacher heard her play and said Hazel knew more than the teacher could teach her. She and her twin sister, Helen, sang duets together throughout their lives. She provided support and encouragement to her children as they became involved in music. Following a brief teaching career at Garland country school, Hazel moved to Sioux City, Iowa. She married Art Ambroson in December, 1943. She worked for Wincharger (which later became part of the Zenith Corporation) during World War II. After the war, she worked at the Mary Elizabeth Day Nursery for a time until going to work at Montgomery Wards. She worked there for 25 years until the Sioux City store closed, and then at Iowa Leather in Sioux City before retiring. Hazel lived in Sioux City until 1981, moving to Phoenix where she enjoyed 18 years of living near her brother Enoch. She kept herself busy in a variety of ways including lots of sewing for patients in local hospitals. Hazel moved to Beresford, South Dakota in September 1998. She maintained an active, independent life until experiencing a stroke in February 2005. She then became a resident of Bethesda of Beresford, a caring home where her paternal grandparents, her father, and siblings, Marvid and Helen, lived in their final days, also. She is survived by Joanne Ambroson, Richard (Gladys) Ambroson, Miriam (Gene) Anderson, Dr. Donald (Tamara) Ambroson, Gene Ambroson, and Gerry (Diane) Ambroson, nine grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979, her parents, brothers and sister, and two grandchildren. She passed away after a short illness on Monday, November 28, 2011. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
